Biological Science Technician (Plants)

Major Duties This position is within the Resource Management Division of Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument. Primary duties will be in the areas of nursery management, landscape restoration and invasive plant management. The incumbent will be responsible for 1) native plant seed collection, seed storage, soil mix preparation, native plant propagation and nursery plant care; 2) removing surface disturbance using manual or mechanical methods, revegetating disturbed sites with nursery grown plants and native plant seed, conducting follow-up monitoring on restored sites; 3) using manual, mechanical and/or chemical methods to control invasive plants, documenting areas and species treated and methods used. The incumbent will lead crews of lower graded technicians, interns and volunteers. The position will involve periods of office work entering data, organizing digital data and photos, managing GPS and GIS data, and preparing summary reports. Most work (70%) will be out-of-doors, in both front and back-country settings, under extreme heat, aridity, and high winds; conditions which often occur in the Sonoran Desert. The work requires regular physical exertion such as walking or climbing over wet, rough, uneven and/or rocky surfaces; bending, crouching, stooping or reaching to observe, collect and/or record field data. Moderately heavy items, such as equipment packs weighing up to 50 pounds, must be lifted and carried on a regular basis. May be required to hike several miles in a day. The incumbent will be required to obtain an Arizona herbicide applicator license within one year of their enter-on-duty (EOD) date. All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-08/26/2020-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect either full-time or 40 hours per week. If a part-time work schedule is reflected, the hours must be annotated to ensure proper crediting of specialized experience. To qualify for this position at the GS-07 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:
Experience:
At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-06 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as:
1) nursery management including seed collection, soil mix preparation, plant propagation and plant care; and 2) ecological restoration including eradication of exotic species, restoration of natural vegetation and plant communities; 3) using technology and technical equipment such as geographic information systems (GIS), global positioning systems (GPS) technology, 4) plant inventories, monitoring, and research involving data collection, data management, statistical analysis, and reporting. You must include hours per week worked. -OR- EDUCATION:
Successful completion of at least one full graduate year of education (18 semester hours or whatever number your school uses to represent one graduate academic year) leading to a Masters or higher degree in botany, biological sciences, natural resource management, or other directly related fields. You must include transcripts. -OR- Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above.I have a combination of specialized experience as described in A above and education as described in B above which total at least one year. For example, 6 months of specialized experience (50% of the experience) and 9 graduate level semester hours (50% of the education), would qualify an applicant for this position. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
