Biological Sciences Technician (Wildlife)

Major Duties:
Provides assistance to the park ecologist in planning and execution of the long-term ecological monitoring program. Makes field observations of natural resource conditions including those related to climate, air quality, water, soils, plants, and animals. Operates and maintains a variety of highly specialized equipment (e.g., measuring tools, traps, wildlife cameras, acoustic monitors, weather stations, radio telemetry, and global positioning system devices) which must be calibrated and synchronized to achieve desired results. Develops various procedures for sampling, testing, evaluation, and devises new or improved methods or designs specialized equipment. Keeps exact, detailed records of experimental data. Tabulates, statistically analyzes and summarizes data using personal computers and software packages. Searches for literature pertinent to area of research, monitoring or management of natural resources for new procedures or techniques. Assists program managers with meeting data management and data quality review and certification. Ensures data are complete and meet standards for distribution and archiving. Utilizes a variety of computer programs to compile, store, retrieve, analyze, and report data and other resource management information, including research and long-term monitoring projects, reports and correspondence. Assists other program managers with pest management, ecological restoration, and endangered species recovery. May supervise interns or volunteers. May be required to obtain a pesticide applicator's license. Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument Area Information Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument is located in the Sonoran Desert in Southwestern Arizona. Park headquarters is located 35 miles from Ajo, Arizona and 5 miles from the international boundary with Mexico. Park housing is very limited and may be available on a competitive bid process most employees live in Ajo. The nearest cites to Ajo include Phoenix (90 miles away) and Tucson (120 miles away). Two commuter vans operate between Ajo and Monument offices. Ajo has a population of 3500 and multiple amenities that allow families and individuals to easily thrive, including:

Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To qualify for this position at the GS-07 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:
Experience:
At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-06 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as:
includes performing biological science duties such as 1) plant and animal inventory, monitoring, and research to assess presence, abundance, reproduction, management issues, population dynamics and climate conditions using established protocols for data collection, data management, statistical analysis, and reporting; 2) wildlife management involving handling endangered species and restoration, maintenance, and enhancement of their aquatic and terrestrial habitats; 3) using technology and technical equipment such as geographic information systems (GIS), global positioning systems (GPS) technology, radio telemetry equipment, motion-triggered cameras, remote weather stations, etc. for collecting, sorting, and manipulating data and other activities. 4) performing physical science activities in managing and maintaining weather stations and collecting water data from wells, springs and ponds; 5) performing integrated pest management and obtaining a pesticide use per. You must include hours per week worked. -OR- EDUCATION:
Successful completion of at least one year (18 semester hours or 27 quarter hours) of graduate education in courses in a field of study directly related to the position to be filled (for example, wildlife biology, wildlife management, ecology, botany, fisheries, hydrology, meteorology etc.). . You must include transcripts. -OR- Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. To combine education and experience, For example, I have 6 months of specialized experience as described in 1A above, and 9 semester hours (or 14 quarter hours) of graduate study in a field of study that is directly-related to the work of this position (for example, wildlife biology, wildlife management, ecology, botany, fisheries, hydrology, meteorology etc.) and demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to perform the work.
